You conducted a satisfaction survey with your residents and team members. You reviewed your results and have a good idea of what you are doing well and what could use some improvements. Now what? Follow the steps below and I promise you will see a drop in resident and employee turnover in as little as three months.

  1. Share the survey results. Get your residents and team members together in separate meetings. Celebrate your high scores, then announce what you plan on improving.
  1. Ask for ideas. During your meetings, ask members to share their specific concerns and ideas for how to fix your target improvement areas. You may think you know exactly what needs to be fixed, but it’s not until you get to the root cause of the problem that you really know what needs to change. Take good notes.
  1. Write an action plan. You can’t cross the ocean by standing and looking at the water. Assemble an action plan team and, together, write out the steps needed to reach each improvement goal. Include who will carry out each step, what resources they need to do it, and when they should be done. Make sure your plan is realistic and achievable in three months. Be the cheerleader for your team to spark a sense of teamwork and enthusiasm.
  1. Monitor your progress. Once your improvements are underway, you’ll want to know if your efforts are making a difference. Find easy ways to measure how things are going using whatever tools seem appropriate. Trying to get food out faster so it’s hot? Have someone stand in the corner and measure how quickly meals are getting out to residents. Hoping to improve the appearance and taste of the food? Throw a quick pulse survey onto the dining tables every two weeks and ask residents to fill it out. Adjust if necessary so things continue to move in the right direction.

When your next survey comes out, look at the survey items you targeted for improvement. Did satisfaction go up in these areas? If you followed the steps above I bet the answer is yes. How are your turnover rates trending? I bet they are down from last year. Follow this process every year and I guarantee your community will rise to the top as a provider and employer of choice in your target geographic area.
